Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog (USA)

Es ist auch ihr bestes … ein Werk, das die Spannung zwischen Ceramic Dogs (nicht ganz so post-)punkigen, neuen Musik- und Free-Jazz-Ausgangspunkten und den Pop-Ambitionen, die sie immer (nie allzu weit) unter der Oberfläche vergraben haben, nicht auflöst … sondern sie vielmehr bis zum Zerreißen antreibt … Hört euch die postapokalyptische Landschaft von „Subsidiary“, das hymnische Manifest „We Are Soldiers in the Army of Love“ oder das rasende Geschimpfe von „Heart Attack“ an: alles perfekt zum Slam-Dancing auf einem Minenfeld (unser aktueller Pop-Moment?). Fans von minimalistischem polytonalem Disco werden das unbeschreibliche „No Name“ sicherlich zu schätzen wissen. Und wenn wechselnde Taktarten dein Ding sind: Der Song „Connection“ hat genau das, was du brauchst. „That’s Entertainment“ verschlingt/dekonstruiert die psychotischen Klischees des Hollywood-Standards, während es der Gang of Four (siehe „Entertainment“) und der „Gang of Four“ (Madame Mao Tse Tung et al.). Doch es ist der Song „Ecstasy“ – dessen vom Boogaloo geprägter Groove an Ribots früheres Werk mit den Cubanos Postizos erinnert –, der die Ethik der Band am deutlichsten zum Ausdruck bringt: „Ich will nicht, dass du mir irgendetwas gibst … es sei denn, du gibst mir … Ekstase.“ Nach 18 Jahren gemeinsamen Lebens auf Tour/in dieser Welt … scheint das die einzige Währung zu sein, die Ceramic Dog noch akzeptiert. Und auf „Connection“ spielen sie damit/darum, als gäbe es kein Morgen.
